In Ontario, the rich agricultural landscape translates into extremely fresh ingredients that are made into amazing meals thanks to some of the country’s (and world’s) top chefs. Across the province, a delicious meal doubles as an experience where you can explore the farm-to-table trend.
From tomatoes in Leamington, to cranberries in Bala, and fresh fruit and wine in the Niagara Fruit Belt, regions across the province lend themselves to high-end and high-flavor food.
In the Niagara Region, Treadwells is known for their fresh take on farm-to-table. They support local producers and in turn, create unique dishes that riff off of the terroir of the area. And of course, they have local wine to match.
Local wine is a perfect match for the fresh food of Niagara-on-the-Lake. Trius Winery and Restaurant rotates their menu based on what’s in season and focuses on “following nature in the kitchen.” Better yet, they tailor wine pairings to the menu du jour and your palate. You can also check out Strewn Winery that’s home to a winery (of course), a restaurant, and a cooking school. Consider this spot your ultimate education in all things farm-to-table and grape-to-glass.
Moving to Prince Edward County, just 2.5 hours east of Toronto, you’ll find food and wine aplenty. Take for example the Taste Trail. This collection of artisans, farmers, and makers will take you through the region in the most delicious way. Stop for a sip at Casa-Dea Estates Winery, check out Vicki’s Veggies which provides many local restaurants with fresh produce, and head to East & Main Bistro for cuisine that draws inspiration from farmers markets. While you’re in the area, the Taste Trail has a cultural counterpart called the Arts Trail that’s also a must-see.
West of Toronto, the quaint community of Stratford is definitely known for its arts scene, but we think it’s a star in the food world too. There are a plethora of farms and even one of the richest agricultural regions in the province, Perth County. The annual Savour Stratford Perth County Culinary Festival is worth a stop as it showcases the flavors of the regions through talks and tastings, food stalls, and more. Another added bonus is that Stratford is home to the Stratford Chefs School, one of the preeminent culinary schools in Canada.
Grey County, tucked away between Georgian Bay and Lake Huron, is home to Eigensinn Farm. And while Grey County is mostly known for its stunning natural beauty, this farm is bucket list-worthy as well. At this quaint farm, you’ll be treated to French fare created from the vegetables and livestock raised right there. The setting is quaint, the food is based on what’s fresh, and it’s BYOB.
Some other top stops throughout the province are the Elmhirst Resort that grows most of its ingredients on site; Ste. Anne’s Country Inn and Spa that features an organic herb, fruit, and vegetable garden alongside its luxe spa; and the Fairmont Royal York that boasts rooftop herb gardens and beehives all in the downtown core of Toronto.

Head to Ottawa and try a new restaurant on the scene, visit a tried-and-true in Toronto, or explore further afield for top dining experiences and, of course, fresh, local cuisine that showcases the bounty offered by one of Canada’s most food-forward provinces.
